Washington Academy of Languages in Seattle (WAL) celebrates 25 years of offering classes in English as a Second Language (ESL), World Languages and Teacher Education! Our French courses emphasize modern spoken French. Class time stresses communication in the French language in everyday situations and invites students to begin speaking from the first day of class. Emphasis is given to standard French, recognized and understood internationally, so students will be able to communicate with French-speaking people worldwide.
French Language Classes:
- French levels I through VI
- Intermediate French Conversation
- Advanced French Conversation
Washington Academy of Languages offers several levels of French. Levels I through VI teach the basic vocabulary and grammar components of the language: all verb tenses and moods, adjective and adverb forms, pronouns, interrogative words, etc. Advanced Conversation classes are available for students who wish to continue beyond Level VI.
The emphasis of Washington Academy of Languages French classes is on conversation; however, we also work on listening, reading and writing since these four skills are essential to language acquisition. Recent research confirms that a new language is more quickly and more effectively learned when all four skills are used in the learning process. Basic vocabulary in
French is acquired relatively quickly within useful contexts such as the workplace, the family, traveling, the media, the arts and so on. Conversation and listening skills are gained as students practice new vocabulary and grammar points. In addition to the textbook and exercise book materials, video tapes, DVDs, CDs, written texts and Internet resources are used to practice comprehension and to acquaint students with the cultures of the French-speaking world.

The instruction is provided by a professional ESL teacher in a learner-centered environment. Students study and live at The Learning Park, making the experience highly successful and memorable. At Washington Academy of Languages situated in downtown Seattle, we offer Mandarin Chinese programs. The basic approach of our programs is to emphasize the use of practical spoken Chinese. The program prepares the student with the skills needed to function in China. By focusing on practical language usage, students are able to actively participate in situations which they can expect to encounter in their travels. Throughout the course, listening and speaking are stressed and the student has ample opportunity to take part in classroom discussions. The small class size also promotes this opportunity and allows the instructor to give individual attention to each student. Each class session is divided into two distinct parts: communicative and explanatory. The communicative segment is the substance of the course. It consists of conversations about common situations among individuals, problem-solving activities, and spontaneous discussions. The explanatory segment consists of grammar explanation, pronunciation practice and exercises.
