Department Overview

OHSU Family Medicine is part of OHSU School of Medicine. OHSU Family Medicine is focused on family health. We provide preventive, primary and specialty care for you, your children, your spouse, your parents and your grandparents. We provide all that family medicine has to offer - from maternity care through geriatrics. Family Medicine strongly supports the comprehensive scope to provide the highest level of care for our community.

The clinical work includes but is not limited to all ages of life including newborn to end of life, taking care of those are pregnant, and supporting patients with substance use disorder including medication-assisted treatment and gender affirming care.

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

Function/Duties of Position

(0.20 FTE) As Sports Medicine Medical Director – this person will oversee the Sports Medicine service line across all family medicine clinics and collaborate closely with partners in Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Physical Therapy, and other departments within the OHSU system.

  • Oversee the growth and maintenance of the Sports Medicine Physicians (SMP) within the Department of Family Medicine (DFM).
  • Interact with DFM on appropriate administrative work including managing personnel work at different sites as relates to SMP and clinics.
  • Maintain Off Campus Authorizations (OCAs), Program Letter of Agreements (PLAs), contracts and relationships with the many community entities that are shareholders with the SMP at OHSU.
  • Collaborate to build a collaborative, interdisciplinary Sports Medicine presence across the OHSU system. This includes collaborative efforts with Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Physical Therapy, and other division and departments within OHSU system.
  • Grow OHSU Sports Medicine presence across new OHSU partnerships – including Tuality/Hillsboro, Adventist, Legacy and others.
  • Increase the Sports Medicine research footprint within the DFM and the larger Sports Medicine Collaborative.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and continued development of the OHSU Portland State (PSU) collaborative. Currently this is a 10-year contractual relationship between OHSU and PSU which involves direct physician services (Orthopedics, SMP FM, and Physical Therapy).
  • Responsible for the maintenance and continued development of additional college and high school Sports Medicine collaborations. These contracts involve direct physician services providing patient care in the community and extends OHSU’s mission to provide “health for all.”
  • Responsible for the oversight and coordination of any Professional Teams Sports Medicine contracts where OHSU is providing contracted care to professional athletes.
  • Maintain the OHSU Sports Medicine concussion program – which ideally includes a SMP, a clinical Neuropsychologist, BH support, and an exercise medicine specialist.
  • Support and collaboration with the Sports Medicine Fellowship Director to ensure the sustainability and growth of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship within OHSU FM.
  • Faculty development role for SMP to enhance and support faculty in promotions efforts and clinical career development work at OHSU.
  • Ensures this program demonstrates OHSU’s strong commitment to diversity in medical education, including in race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, cultural background, disability status, and learning style.
  • Lead Meetings with SMP group monthly.
