McCrory Gardens is offering a rewarding position in leadership and public horticulture as a Crew Leader. McCrory Gardens, established in 1965, is located in Brookings, SD on the eastern edge of the South Dakota State University campus. The 70 acres of formal gardens and arboretum, as well as the Education & Visitor Center are managed by professionals of the University. McCrory Gardens is named to honor Samuel

A. McCrory, beloved department head of Horticulture from 1947 – 1964. More than 42,000 guests and visitors come to enjoy McCrory Gardens annually.

Job Responsibilities:

• Perform general landscaping and grounds maintenance.
• Maintain and operate landscaping equipment.
• Train and supervise seasonal crew.
• Provide horticultural and grounds support for all garden areas and seasonal events.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of hardy plant care appropriate to the region.
• Basic mechanic and irrigation skills.
• Supervisory techniques.

Skill & Ability to:

• Communicate effectively particularly in terms of team building/supervising a team.
• Lift 25 lbs.
• Work in all types of weather, under strenuous conditions.

Required License:

• Valid driver’s license.
• State of South Dakota Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s license, or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.

Working Conditions

As a crew leader for a botanical garden and arboretum, the tasks can be very physical at most times. Much time is spent literally on the ground of all types of conditions. A great deal of work is performed with the hands.
