the kenosha county sheriff’s office is currently recruiting for the position of admissions/release specialist. This is a clerical position that performs tasks relating to the booking and releasing of inmates in the kenosha county jail.

2025 starting rate of pay: $21.82 per hour

work schedule

  • the kenosha county jail is a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week operation.
  • employees with full-time positions work 12-hour shifts on a rotating pattern of:

two (2) days on, three (3) days off; two (2) days on, two (2) days off; and three (3) days on, two (2) days off.

  • employees must work scheduled holidays and weekends and must be able to work any of the existing shifts.
  • employees must be able to work overtime when needed, with or without advance notice.

duties and responsibilities

  • performs admissions and release tasks relating to inmates at the kenosha county jail.
  • obtains personal history and charge information and enters data into jail management software.
  • completes detailed verification of physical and health conditions of the inmate at initial intake.
  • verifies wanted/warrant checks on the inmate at the initial intake and prior to release.
  • completes inmate cell transfers, schedules inmate events, and schedules and completes inmate visitation transactions in jail management software.
  • interprets various legal documents and applies charges to inmate records.
  • interprets daily court documents and identifies if an inmate should be released.
  • schedules and confirms inmate phone conferences and approved visits.
  • communicates with the courts, probation and parole, and any other local, state, or federal agency and assists as needed.
  • prepares inmate court and medical transports and tracks inmate court appearances and outcomes.
  • identifies inmates who need to make an initial appearance.
  • updates and maintains records based on court activity and for issuance of bond forms.
  • receives and processes incoming and outgoing inmate mail.
  • maintains financial records for inmate funds.
  • monitors the intake security area.
  • monitors inmate video visitation and responds accordingly when violations are observed.
  • processes inmate mug shot and fingerprint information.
  • acts as jail receptionist, answering the telephone, taking messages, and referring calls.
  • monitors a designated email address 24/7 and responds accordingly.
  • works at jail counter assisting the public, relaying information, and releasing jail property.
  • is responsible for auditing the sheriff’s retention program regarding inmate records.
  • maintains time system certification.
  • performs other duties as required or assigned.

success factors

  • knowledge of standard office practices and procedures; alphabetical, numerical, and chronological filing methods; telephone procedures, including operation of multi-line equipment and message-taking; recordkeeping methods; basic computer data entry and software including microsoft office.
  • skill in basic math and cash handling and communicating both verbally and in writing.
  • ability to operate a variety of office equipment including pc/computer, telephone, fax machine, photocopier, and calculator.
  • ability to perform in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment; gather, organize, and evaluate a variety of data and information and interpret and apply complex rules, regulations, guidelines, and laws; understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • ability to, while in a secure setting, possess the self-control and ability in verbal communication skills to manage aggressive, hostile, and emotional behavior from incarcerated subjects and/or by citizens, both in person and on the telephone.
  • ability to manage and process sensitive information while maintaining confidentiality.
