JOB TITLE: Arborist
JOB PURPOSE: Oversee and coordinate maintenance of trees and woody plants to ensure healthy, safe, and attractive conditions by applying chemical applications, repairing, fertilizing, watering, pruning, and removing those that are dead, diseased, or in decline.
This position has been deemed essential as addressed in the University of Wyoming’s
Employee Handbook
. Employees in essential positions may be required to work during emergency closures and winter closure based on the nature of their job duties and the reasons for the closure.
This position involves
on-call
status.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Repair, fertilize, water, and prune trees and other woody plants; removal of those that are dead, diseased, or in decline.
- Oversee tree care to ensure quality of landscape. Identify potential hazards and assess tree health.
- Lead, guide, and train staff/student employees to perform related work.
- Coordinate, train, schedule, and work in conjunction with seasonal employees responsible for providing landscaping maintenance on university grounds.
- Maintenance coordination and guidance includes turf, tree, and shrub care, mowing, watering, and fertilizing.
- Maintain tree inventory records.
- Ensure safe and proper use of equipment and PPE. Resolve issues in a timely and professional manner.
- Coordinate, supervise, and perform removal and planting of trees in accordance with UW tree succession plan.
- Climb trees and/or use aerial lift equipment to reach dead, damaged, or unwanted limbs or treetops for removal and pruning or for the purpose of complete tree removal.
- Perform various types of rigging with cranes, tractors, and other heavy equipment in accordance with ISA standards.
- Assist with snow removal operations by operating snow removal equipment to clear campus walkways.
- Assist in various maintenance activities including routine repairs to tools, equipment, and facilities.

WORK LOCATION: This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate to be available to work on campus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Associate’s degree or completion of related technical or vocational education/training
Experience:
3 years work-related experience in tree identification or equivalent
Required licensure, certification, registration, or other requirements:
- ISA Certified Arborist required or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date
- Wyoming Pesticide License in Ornamental and Turf Pest Control or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of Horticulture
- Knowledge of Arboriculture
- Experience in Urban Forestry
