Description
RN-Medical/Surgical -Report to the Director, the staff RN is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame and provides care to those patients via therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the environment/instrumentation, and other healthcare team members. If assigned as charge nurse, will serve as a resource for coordination of activities on the unit.
Responsibilities as charge include, but are not limited to, assessment of unit needs, available resources for current and oncoming shift(s) based on patient acuity, volume, individuals and family needs, and special clinical procedures or interventions pending.

Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates knowledge and application of the nursing process.
- Plans and implements patient care and teaching based on the total assessment and the age of the patient.
- Develops a plan of care that is individualized for the patient needs reflecting collaboration with other members of the healthcare team, the patient, and the family as appropriate.
- Evaluates and documents the patient response; monitors and recognizes changes in physiological and psychosocial status; taking appropriate action based on the assessment of the patient.
- Participates and cooperates in the unit-based Quality Improvement process.
- Supports, maintains, and provides an environment that is supportive of quality patient care based on best practices using a holistic approach to care, and by adhering to effectively using resources and personnel.
- Practices, develops, and endorses customer service skills in relationships with internal and external customers.
- Serves as patient and family advocate with respect to the patient’s right to privacy, autonomy, and dignity by protecting confidentiality of information.
- Formulates individualized teaching and educational plans based on identified learning needs and evaluates the effectiveness of learning including the patient and family as appropriate.
- Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, workshops, and shows responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education.
Minimum Education:
Must possess a current and active Registered Nurse License in the State of Tennessee.
Required Skills:
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) are required.
(BLS may be obtained within the first week of patient care following orientation)
(ACLS & PALS may be obtained within six months of patient care following orientation).
Licenses:
Current and active Registered Nurse License in the State of Tennessee.
