As a Veterinary Technician you will be performing and documenting basic veterinary laboratory procedures in compliance with appropriate SOPs, GLPs, protocols and Regulatory Agency guidelines. Monitoring animal health and welfare in compliance with the animal welfare act and uphold the stringent values of a Culture of Care to ensure that animals in their care are the highest priority at all times.

What you will be doing:

As a Veterinary Technician you will support the Veterinarian by performing radiographs, collecting blood and fecal samples, routine animal care procedures such as dog dentals, physical exams, monitoring animal health and other veterinary laboratory procedures as well as surgical requirements (non-surgery suite) including but not limited to the following duties and responsibilities in compliance with appropriate SOP, Protocol, and Regulatory Agency guidelines:

  • Ensure animals are cared for in accordance with regulatory guidelines and with the highest scientific, humane, and ethical principles.

  • Perform animal husbandry duties as needed.

  • Report all animal care concerns and becomes involved in resolution and appropriate corrective action, when necessary.

  • Can interpret and understand a basic protocol.

  • Basic understanding of good research practices (GXP) principles.

  • Reviews all documentation and understands the level of a quality assurance (QA) audit.

  • Maintains client confidentiality at all times.

  • Learns to utilize computer software.

  • Ensures study activities are conducted according to protocol, standard operating procedure documents, and government regulations.

  • Learns and performs various medicant administration routes, general physical exams, basic dosing, sample collection techniques and restraint procedures on multiple species as applicable.

  • Learns and may perform methods of euthanasia on multiple species.

  • Learns and performs aseptic surgical preparation, anesthesia, and surgical procedures on multiple species as applicable.

  • Effectively manages time and resources.

  • Support other departments on study related tasks (including but not limited to):
    Animal restraint, blood collection, study support.

  • Learns about Animal Care and Use Activities (ACUA and IACUC).

  • Develops positive relationships and communication skills with veterinary staff and other groups.

  • May be involved in process improvement projects.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences with no experience.

  • OR Associate degree in Laboratory Animal Technology or in Veterinary Technology with 2 years' experience assisting or performing small and large animal examinations.

  • OR an equivalent combination of education in Animal Science, Biology or related life science field and 2 years of experience assisting or performing small and large animal examinations may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education.

Preferred Experience/Qualifications

  • AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level is encouraged but not required.
