Job Summary:
A Commercial Lighting Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, retrofitting, and repairing lighting systems in commercial buildings. This role involves working with various lighting technologies, including LED upgrades, fluorescent fixtures, and smart lighting controls. The technician ensures all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with electrical codes and project specifications.
- Install new lighting systems, including LED fixtures, troffers, high bays, and outdoor lighting.
- Retrofit existing lighting systems for energy efficiency and code compliance.
- Mount, wire, and connect ballasts, drivers, and control systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair faulty lighting systems, including diagnosing wiring issues, replacing ballasts, and fixing fixture components.
- Perform routine maintenance, including bulb and ballast replacements.
- Conduct voltage testing and system diagnostics to identify electrical faults.
- Follow OSHA, NFPA, and NEC safety standards while working on lighting systems.
- Use proper PPE and adhere to job site safety protocols.
- Ensure all work meets local electrical codes and project specifications.
- Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Assist in job site preparation, including material handling and setup.
- Maintain accurate work orders and documentation of completed tasks.
- Work closely with foremen, electricians, and project managers to complete projects efficiently.
- Provide updates on job progress and report any issues or delays.
- Communicate effectively with clients and team members.
Experience: 1-3 years of experience in commercial lighting installation, maintenance, or a related electrical field.
Technical Knowledge: Understanding of lighting systems, electrical wiring, and troubleshooting methods.
Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret wiring schematics and technical drawings.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work at heights, and operate lifts and scaffolding.
Certifications: OSHA 10/30, NFPA 70E, or equivalent (preferred).
Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and teamwork abilities.
Works on commercial job sites such as offices, warehouses, retail stores, and industrial buildings. Requires travel between locations, often working at heights using lifts or ladders. May involve working in both indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to electrical components.
