The Formulation Scientist will join the R&D Group in Ogden, UT, reporting to the Director of R&D. The role focuses on application development and technical support, primarily for the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical markets. Balchem’s products include various choline salts, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), chelated minerals, and more. These products serve the food, feed, nutraceutical, personal care, and pharmaceutical markets, utilizing technologies such as spray drying, agglomeration, granulation, distillation, crystallization, microencapsulation, milling, and blending.

The Formulation Scientist applies formulation science knowledge to oral solid dosage forms, collaborating with marketing, sales, manufacturing, supply chain, quality, analytical labs, and other R&D groups. Responsibilities include generating scientific data across lab, pilot plant, and commercial scales, becoming an in-house expert on customer usage of Balchem products. The role involves project management, report writing, and data presentation, balancing customer-facing and laboratory-focused tasks.

Travel to customer locations for visits and scale-up trials is required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Execute application development projects for customers in the nutraceutical and allied markets (OTC, pharmaceutical).
  • Demonstrate the utility of Balchem products and assist customers in the formulation and scale-up of new products.
  • Develop technical application data to support commercial/regulatory strategies.
  • Communicate the functionality and benefits of Balchem ingredients to support commercial strategies.
  • Identify gaps in the Balchem product line and generate new product ideas.
  • Collaborate with R&D team members on new product development.
  • Provide high-level technical support to internal and external customers.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures, maintaining the integrity of the R&D lab environment.
  • Validate Balchem products through qualitative and analytical evaluations.
  • Contribute to customer formula development programs, showcasing Balchem ingredients in various product categories.
  • Support business platform-related activities by attending trade shows, sales calls, and demonstrations.
  • Develop relationships with key individuals at critical customers.
  • Assess competitive product lines.
  • Stay current with new technologies and developments.
  • Build and maintain relationships with current and potential customers.
  • Collaborate with internal cross-functional team members.
  • Perform tests on new samples produced in the pilot plant, comparing actual results to predictions.
  • Provide technical support to sales organizations, customers, and prospective customers.
  • Manage customer projects and communicate project status.
  • Source equipment and ingredients for laboratory projects.
  • Maintain accurate R&D files, project files, and lab notebooks.
  • Participate in scheduled meetings and keep team members informed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS in Pharmaceutical Science, Chemistry, Material Science or related discipline;
    Advanced degree (Masters/Ph.D.) preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience in an R&D, Formulation, or Application Development role in the nutraceutical or allied industry (OTC, pharmaceutical, excipients, API).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of oral solid dose (tablets, capsules, gummies, etc.) development required.
  • Some business travel in automobile, bus, train, and plane is required.
  • May be required to lift and carry large boxes/bags. The work environment may be noisy, wet, slippery, and hot or cold at times.
