Wastewater Compliance Specialist - Entry and Senior
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hiring a Compliance Specialist (Wastewater Specialist Entry or Senior) to implement and manage Wisconsin Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (WPDES) Permits in the Wastewater Program in Northeast and Northern Regions to ensure public health, welfare, and the environment are protected through compliance with state and federal regulations.
This recruitment will be used to fill a position headquartered in either the Northeast or Northern Region at one of the following locations (Please select all locations at which you may be interested in being headquartered):
- Antigo
- Green Bay
- Park Falls
- Wautoma

Remote work will be available after the initial onboarding period. The exact amount is based on program need.
Position SummaryThis position’s primary responsibilities are enforcing state water pollution control laws; responding to complaints and emergencies related to permitted facilities; implementing wastewater discharge permit requirements; and inspecting and providing compliance assistance to municipalities and industries in the management of their wastewater collection and treatment facilities. Regulated wastewater facilities include municipal and industrial systems with a range of sizes and types.
Starting pay is $30.00 - $34.03 per hour ($62,400.00 - $70,782.40 annually) for the Entry level.
Starting pay is $32.82 - $36.91 per hour ($68,265.60 - $76,772.80 annually) for the Senior level.
These positions are in Wastewater Specialist – Entry and/or Wastewater Specialist – Senior classifications within Pay Schedule/Range 15-04 and 15-03 respectively. A 12-month probation period may be required.

Travel: Routine travel within the assigned geographic area is expected along with occasional overnight travel for wastewater program assistance to other regions, meetings, and training.

Required qualifications include experience in ALL the following criteria:
- Customer Service experience answering inquiries or complaints from a broad range of customers.
Preferred Qualifications Include:
- Assessing and enforcing environmental compliance principles, procedures, and administrative code.
- Investigating environmental complaints related to wastewater, such as answering public questions regarding spills, violations, limit exceedances, etc.
- Interpreting and applying regulatory policies, standards, or guidelines; or WPDES Permits.
- Data review and analysis of environmental data sets.
- Degree in wastewater management.
- Experience in wastewater treatment plant operations.
- Experience addressing or resolving conflict regarding controversial environmental issues.
