The Pennington County Sheriff's Office, located in Rapid City, South Dakota, is accepting applications for Inmate Security Officers to serve in our adult jail facility. Inmate Security Officers serve a vital role in providing a safe and secure environment for staff and inmates.

Inmate Security Officers assigned to the Pennington County Jail are staffed between 10pm and 7am based on operational needs.

Position Functions for Full-Time Inmate Security Officer

Performing security rounds during scheduled and unscheduled times. Using discretion to determine violations, unusual situations, and directing the appropriate response.

Initiating and monitoring inmate movement.

Attending to the needs of inmates in assigned areas including responding to inmate inquiries as directed.

Distributing authorized items to inmates.

Being alert and prepared to respond with force in an emergent situation, and to aid others as outlined in policy.

Understanding and enforcement of the Prison Rape Elimination Act Federal Standards.

Using discretion in responding to inmate requests.

Responding to emergencies, including medical emergencies.

Responding to inmate mental health behaviors to include determining risk factors for mental health intervention or implementing suicide precautions.

Documenting incidents, movement, rounds, and inmate discipline.

Performing person, property, and facility searches.

Facilitating inmate movement as directed.

Operating department computer programs; dictating and/or typing reports.

Assisting with cell block operational tasks as needed.

Minimum Requirements

High School Diploma or GED.

At least 19 years of age for Full-Time Positions.

Preference will be given to those with military, public safety, and/or security experience.

Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and pre-employment drug screen.

No felony convictions.
