MECHANIC I – primarily responsible for major mechanical work on vehicles, trucks, trailers, implements, large and small equipment, and tools.
MECHANIC II – In addition to Mechanic I duties and responsibilities, the Mechanic II is primarily charged with performing all major mechanical work on vehicles, trucks, trailers, implements, campus standby generators, large and small equipment and tools. Includes welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including fabrication of parts for vehicles and equipment. Participates in University Services Fleet and Equipment condition assessment.
MECHANIC III – In addition to Mechanic II duties and responsibilities, the Mechanic III is primarily charged with performing all major mechanical work on mid to heavy trucks, diesel engines, tractors hydraulics and other specialty vehicles, equipment, and implements.

Salary: Salary range of $25.01 to $31.88 per hour, commensurate with education and experience.
General Statement: The mechanic shop, as part of the Facilities Services department, services and maintains all heavy equipment, vehicles, equipment and implements used by Facilities Services and a variety of MSU departments.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesMECHANIC I –
- Major mechanical work includes adjusting, repairing, and replacing engines, motors, drivetrain, suspension and steering, electrical/electronic systems, fuel systems, brake systems, heating and cooling systems, body controls systems, and hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Minor maintenance duties and repairs such as adjusting, lubricating, changing fluids and filters, replacing engine and body accessories, and repairing and replacing tires.
- Requisition parts through Campus Stores and vendors.
- Estimate time and cost of services.
- Accurately complete service records.
- Assist Service Technician(s) and Mechanic(s) as required.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
MECHANIC I –
- Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of mechanic/machinist trade.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, adjust, maintain, and repair a variety of automotive (gasoline and diesel), agricultural, and specialized equipment.
- Estimate time and materials and maintain accurate records.
- Organize and prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines.
- ASE certification Automobile/Light trucks for:
- Engine repair
- Suspension and Steering
- Brakes
- Electrical/Electronic systems.
- Ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire ASE Certification Automobile/Light trucks for:
- Automatic transmission/transaxle
- Manual drive train and axles
- Heating and Air conditioning
- Light vehicle diesel engines
- Valid Montana state Commercial Driver’s license, Class B, no air restrictions or, if licensed in a different state, the ability to obtain a Montana CDL within 60 days of starting in the position.
- Demonstrated experience guiding and suggesting work methods, materials and practices to others in an effort to improve efficiency and maintenance of a fleet of vehicles.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of computerized diagnostic tools and repair software systems.
- Demonstrated general welding skills.
- Demonstrated ability in repairing heavy equipment.
- Demonstrated ability in diagnosing and repairing Medium-Heavy truck and Tractor Hydraulics.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
MECHANIC I –
- Weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including fabrication of parts.
- ASE Certification Automobile/Light trucks for:
- Automatic transmission/transaxle
- Manual drive train and axles
- Heating and Air conditioning
- Light vehicle diesel engine
- Other relevant certifications.
MECHANIC II –
- Demonstrated experience managing and maintaining an auto parts inventory program.
- Demonstrated experience repairing heavy equipment.
- Other certifications relevant to the position, e.g. additional ASE or other certifications.
MECHANIC III –
