Job Summary:
The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position is responsible for providing on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks. The role involves job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication, and managing various types of On-Track Safety in both controlled and non-controlled track areas.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Jobsite Protection: Ensure the required jobsite protection on each assignment, error-free and consistent with the rules. This includes radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, and granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits.
- Daily Briefings: Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure adherence to the safety requirements of the railroad.
- Documentation: Prepare and submit required electronic forms, including job set-up forms for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other necessary reports.
- Equipment Handling: Manage and place signs, derails, and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, as needed throughout the day.
- Safety Training: Actively participate in routine safety classes and qualification training.
- Communication: Maintain high-level communication with RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
- Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned to meet business needs.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Ability to meet required physical demands and complete necessary tasks.
- Ability to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains.
- Understanding of On-Track Safety training and qualification requirements for protected roadway workers.
- Proficiency in radio communication procedures with RWIC/EICs (Employees in Charge).
- Capability to conduct job briefings with all roadway workers at their location.
- Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
- Skill in installing railroad derails and applying locking devices.
- Proficiency with electronic communications, including email and text, and standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Minimum of 2 years in track and/or construction experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- 2 - 5 years of track and/or construction experience.
- Prior front-line first responder and/or Military experience is a plus.
- Prior experience working within a railway company.
- Training in railway “Track Inspection Guidelines” or equivalent.
Additional Qualifications, Certifications, etc.:
- CSX - FCI On-Track Worker and Operating Rules.
