Full job description

Fayette Electric Cooperative is seeking an Apprentice Lineman to join our La Grange, TX team.

The Apprentice Lineman supports Journeyman Linemen in performing essential electrical tasks, including the installation, construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electric distribution systems. Responsibilities extend to working on transformers, meters, metering equipment, electrical substations, and other related infrastructure critical to the cooperative's operations.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Line Installation and Repair:
    • Install, maintain, and repair electrical transmission and distribution lines, including feeders throughout the system.
    • Perform instrumentation and meter installation, ensuring proper function and accuracy.
    • Repair and replace secondary feeders and service drops to ensure reliable service for members.
  • System Inspection and Maintenance:
    • Conduct inspections of electrical systems and equipment to identify and correct faults, worn components, and potential hazards.
    • Perform preventative maintenance on transformers, breakers, switches, and other critical system components.
  • Infrastructure Installation:
    • Install transformers, primary and secondary vaults, switching stations, and underground lines (primary and secondary).
    • Construct, maintain, and dismantle overhead and underground electrical systems per design specifications and safety standards.
  • Technical Proficiency and Troubleshooting:
    • Interpret and utilize one-line diagrams, blueprints, and schematics to troubleshoot and repair the distribution system efficiently.
    • Perform cable splicing and terminations for wires and cables up to 24,900 volts following manufacturer specifications and industry best practices.
    • Test circuit continuity, compatibility, and safety using standard testing instruments.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Maintain a safe and organized worksite, adhering to all safety regulations and cooperative standards.
    • Proactively identify and mitigate potential safety hazards in the work environment.
    • Participate in regular safety meetings, training sessions, and compliance updates.
  • Tree Trimming and Vegetation Management:
    • Trim and clear tree branches and vegetation near electrical lines to maintain system reliability and safety.
  • Pole Climbing and Equipment Operation:
    • Climb electric poles using spikes and other approved equipment.
    • Operate trucks, diggers, aerial lifts, and other utility equipment as needed for job completion.
  • On-Call and Emergency Response:
    • Respond to outages, emergencies, and service restoration calls as part of a rotating on-call schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Professional Development and Other Duties:
    • This position offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and structured training leading to Journeyman Lineman certification. Employees are encouraged to participate in industry-specific training programs, attend cooperative-sponsored workshops, and pursue additional certifications to enhance their skills and advance their careers within the cooperative.
    • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors to support the cooperative’s goals and objectives. Attend safety meetings, as required.
  • Qualifications:

    • A valid CDL driver's license is required, as the role involves daily travel to and from job sites using commercial vehicles and equipment.
    • Knowledge of principles and practices in power line construction service and operations and maintenance requirements in an electric distribution system is preferred.
    • The ability to read and interpret staking sheets, all RUS specifications and line construction assemblies, the NEC and National Electric Safety Code is preferred.
    • The ability to interpret the Cooperative’s electrical and mechanical tagging and other numbering systems and the layout of electrical transmission and distribution lines.
    • Ability to gain working knowledge of the policies and procedures of Fayette Electric Cooperative.
    • The ability to interpret the Cooperative’s layout of electrical substation, transmission, and distribution lines.
    • Understanding that their performance will be evaluated throughout the progression of the apprenticeship.
