Business Internships:
Students working towards a business degree
receive a solid foundation in basic skills and
knowledge relating to key areas of the business
world. Many programs allow students the
opportunity to gain practical experience through
completing an internship. Internships allow
students to observe and participate in a variety
of real world business experiences. Business
internships are temporary positions with
companies or organizations that are usually
part-time during the academic year and full-time
during the summer.
Internships are generally
unpaid positions but some companies will provide
a stipend to cover expenses such as meals or
travel expenses. You may be able to gain
academic credit for a successful internship.
This may involve coordinating with a supervisor
from your school who will ensure that you link
your practical experiences with the academic
requirements of your program. Internships give
you an opportunity to work alongside industry
professionals and demonstrate your ability to
them. They can enable a student to make valuable
contacts which may lead to full-time employment
on graduation. Internships can also be an
excellent way of getting your foot in the door
with a company you may particularly want to work
with.
What does a business internship entail?
Business students are encouraged to try to gain
experience that is relevant to the area they are
specializing in. The following are areas that
business students may choose to focus on:
Finance; Human Resource Management; Management
Skills; Economics; Marketing; Business
Information Systems; Legal Studies.
If you are
specializing in Finance, your business
internship may involve assisting with accounting
practices or reviewing financial procedures. Marketing majors may be involved in market
research or generating new customers through
cold-calling. Human Resource Management students
may be involved in developing training programs
or designing staff manuals. Many interns will be
expected to do administrative work such as
developing or maintaining customer databases.
The work you do should enable you to enhance
your current skills and knowledge. You should
clarify in your interview exactly what type of
work the company expects their interns to do.
How do I find a business internship?
Generally it is your responsibility to find your
internship. You should distribute your resume
with a cover letter to companies that you are
interested in working with. Ensure that you
check each the deadline for internship
applications for each company. Competition for
internships with leading companies is usually
very intense. If you are called for an
interview, make sure that you have thoroughly
researched the company – their product line,
customer base etc. Your school may have
information on companies that regularly offer
internships.
Some schools will help you to find
the best placement for you. You should bear in
mind that larger companies may provide better
opportunities to gain experience within a
specialized area. However, smaller companies may
offer more general internships working in all
departments of the company. This often means
that your abilities are visible to more people,
including those in senior management. This could
greatly enhance your chance of being offered a
full-time job following graduation.
What skills do you need to win a business
internship?
Doing a good interview is key to winning the
business internship you want. You should be able
to prove that you are passionate about the area
of business you would like to specialize in
following graduation. Ensure that you can speak
knowledgably about the latest trends and events
within the industry.
Companies benefit from
exposure to the current knowledge, skills and
practices of the intern so you should be
prepared to show that you have performed well
academically. You will need to have good
computer skills and be particularly proficient
in Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent
communication skills are vital for success in an
internship in any area of business. You will
need to be able to clearly express yourself
verbally and through the written word.
