Seattle Japanese Language School:
The Seattle Japanese Language School, part of the JCCCW (Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Washington), offers evening and summer Japanese classes to adults from beginner to advanced levels. The mission of the Seattle Japanese Language School is to give instruction in the Japanese Language augmented by the introduction of culture and history of Japan and to enhance the learning process. The Seattle Japanese Language School has a very proud history as the oldest operating Japanese language school in the continental United States. The Seattle Japanese Language School merged to become a part of the JCCCW in 2009.
Evening Japanese Classes for Adults:
All adult classes are 8 week sessions, meeting one day a week for two hours; from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Class levels range from Beginner I to Advanced.
Japanese for Beginners 1:
Learn commonly used words, daily expressions, numbers, time related expressions and various counters. Some simple sentence patterns, verb conjugation (~masu, ~masen), hiragana(writing) are introduced. Speaking and listening skills are emphasized.
Japanese for Beginners 2:
Students learn new sentence patterns, verb and adjective conjugations (present and past, positive and negative forms, ~te form), as well as particles. Speaking and listening skills are emphasized.
Japanese for Beginners 3:
Short forms (verbs and adjectives) are introduced. The short forms are used in casual conversation, complex sentences, etc. Comparative and superlative expressions, ~tsumori, adjective +naru are also taught in this class. Speaking and listening skills are emphasized.
Japanese for Beginners 4:
Verb tai( I want to ~), ~tari, ~tari suru, ~ta koto ga aru, ~n desu, ~hou ga ii, ~nakucha ikemasen, ~deshoo, ~shi, ~shi, ~soo desu (looks like), ~te miru, nara are introduced. Potential verbs and frequency of events over a period of time are also taught in this class. Speaking and listening skills are emphasized.
Intermediate Japanese 1:
Hoshii, ~kamo shiremasen, ageru/kureru/morau, ~tara doo desu ka, ~te oku, ~te kureru/~te ageru/~te morau, ~te itadakemasen ka, ~to ii, ~toki are introduced. Verb conjugation volitional form( verb oo form) and its usage are included in this class. Speaking and listening skills are emphasized.
Intermediate Japanese 2:
~soo desu( I hear), ~tte, ~tara, ~nakutemo ii, ~mitai, ~te shimau, ~to(whenever), ~nagara, ~ba yokatta, ~te yokatta, ~hazu are introduced. The introduction of transitive and intransitive verbs and honorific verbs help students understand the culture. Speaking and listening skills are emphasized.
Intermediate Japanese 3:
Keigo(kenjoogo), passive voice, causative voice and causative passive voice are introduced. More usage of verb te form are added(~te oku, te hoshii). Introduction of verb “ba” form and its usage.(conditional statement). Speaking and listening skills are emphasized.
Advanced Japanese:
Prerequisite: Students should have knowledge of all conjugation forms ((verbs and adjectives), hiragana, katakana and some kanji. Verb (plain form) bakari, verb(plain form) yoo ni naru, verb(plain form) tokoro, Verb(plain) koto ni naru, verb (plain ) koto ni suru, sentence wake desu, verb te(causative ) itadakenai deshoo ka, ~ba, ~hodo, etc. are introduced. Four language skills (speaking, listening, writing and reading) are emphasized in this class.
Saturday Youth Classes are also available.
