Students can study English in one of four levels: Elementary, Intermediate, Pre-Advanced, and Advanced.
English Language Programs For International Students:
English language programs for all levels including Elementary, Intermediate, Pre-Advanced and Advanced levels.
- Semester-Length Intensive ESL Program:
We provide instruction in English as a second language for non-native speakers who will use English to study at an American college or in their workplaces.
All students, in all levels, will study 3 classes a day. There is a speaking and listening class for 1 hour / day and a grammar and communication class for 1 hour / day. Also, students will study reading and writing for 2 hours / day. So, students are in class 20 hours a week.
At the end of each semester (Fall and Spring), and each session (Summer I and II), students will receive a grade for each class. They will also receive specific information about their progress in English and preparation for studying in the university. Students who want to enter Western Michigan University may show that their English is ready to enter the University by passing all the Advanced level of CELCIS classes.
In order to show that their English is ready to enter Western Michigan University undergraduate classes, Advanced level students must have a minimum grade of 75% or C in all classes. Also, they must pass the "CELCIS Criteria for University Recommendation." Instructors will consider each Advanced level student's ability to write in English, to take lecture notes, to create a study guide from a reading text, to give an oral presentation, and to write a research paper. For some graduate students, it will be necessary to take the TOEFL test to show that their English is ready.
- Short-Term ESL Programs:
IGA (International Graduate Assistant) Summer Program:
Every summer, CELCIS offers the IGA (International Graduate Assistant) program to help graduate assistants improve their English before they begin their teaching assignments.
Also, in the past, CELCIS has offered the pre-MBA Institute, which is a short-term course that prepares international students for entering the Master’s in Business Administration program at WMU. Another possibility is bringing English instruction to you. Currently, CELCIS offers a one-week intensive academic writing class at the University of Tokyo. The class meets once a year in Tokyo, Japan for detailed instruction on writing academic articles for publication.
Short programs can be developed to suit the needs and requirements of students.
Additionally: Activities such as conversation programs, social hours, sports and cultural events on campus and off-campus field trips. The activities you do outside the classroom are just as important to the work you do inside the classroom. By participating in more activities, your English will improve and you will gain confidence, you will make more friends, discover more about WMU and Kalamazoo and have more fun.
